Memmingen is a popular tourist destination with its important sights in the historic old town, diverse cultural events, markets and festivals, attractive shopping opportunities and a varied gastronomic offer from over 150 restaurants and cafés.
The history of Memmingen goes back to the Stone Age. The rich history of the city is reflected in the many historic buildings and squares, with the well-preserved medieval city walls and numerous patrician houses that bear witness to centuries of change.
Memmingen is also known as the "City of Human Rights" and has been awarding the "Memminger Freedom Prize" for services to justice, freedom and equality since 2005. The city is nicknamed the "City of Gates, Towers and Gables". Visitors can explore the city on two marked circular routes that lead to many points of interest. Highlights along the route are the market square, the town hall, the wheelhouse, the large guild, the Catholic Church of St. Johann and the Hermansbau with the town museum.
