The imposing Zeil Castle is enthroned on the Zeiler mountain ridge and offers a breathtaking view over Leutkirch and the southern Allgäu to the Alps. The Renaissance castle has been owned by the princes of Waldburg-Zeil since 1599 and serves as their residence. Although the interior of the castle cannot be visited, the grounds with ancient linden trees, imposing fountains and statues are a beautiful place to relax and stroll. The associated parish church is also worth a visit.
The castle was built to replace the previous castle built in 1123 and to demonstrate the power and prestige of the noble family. Since 1337 it has been owned by the counts and stewards of Waldburg, who were later made princes. The castle was never damaged by war or sieges and has been completely preserved and restored as an ensemble. Inside, the richly decorated rooms convey a clear picture of aristocratic living culture.
Zeil Castle can be reached in a few minutes by car from Leutkirch and is a popular destination for tourists who love history and architecture.
